Caring Neighborhoods photo 2About Caring Neighborhoods

  • Oftentimes, a little help with simple daily tasks such as offering a ride to the grocery store or visiting a lonely senior can mean the difference between an older person remaining in the community or moving from their long-term home.
  • We help to organize neighbors’ efforts to reach out to neighborhood seniors while staying informed of programs and services available to older adults.

Why Caring Neighborhoods?

  • Did you know that over 20,000 Sacramento County residents are 85 years and older?
  • Public agencies and non-profit organizations are unable to keep up with the overwhelming demand for assistance.
  • As neighbors, we are in the best position to fill the gap by assisting our elderly neighbors with small tasks, thus helping them to live in their own homes.

All neighborhoods are different, and so is each Caring Neighborhood. You decide how big or small your program will be based upon the needs and time commitments of your neighbors.

Maybe you would like to:

  • share information about local senior meal programs or how to protect one’s self from fraud
  • create a phone tree with other neighbors to call neighborhood seniors to check on their well-being
  • help a senior to maintain their yard, or offer a ride to the grocery store for an older person who does not drive.
  • There is something that Caring Neighbors of ALL AGES can do to help!
  • A simple act of kindness can make a world of difference in the life of an elderly neighbor!

Try these helpful activities or come up with your own. Here are some ways that Caring Neighbors are helping neighborhood seniors:

  • Sharing neighborhood phone numbers with senior neighbors to contact in case of an emergency
  • Taking morning walks with a frail senior
  • Sharing garden fruits and vegetables with an older neighbor
  • Organizing youths to tend yards of neighborhood elderly
  • Keeping a watchful eye out for suspicious activity near the homes of seniors
  • Maintaining the garden of an older adult for a few minutes each day
  • Visiting a lonely older adult for a few minutes each day
  • Caring Neighborhoods photo 5Providing rides to doctor appointments or to the grocery store for a senior who does not drive
  • Assisting a caregiver of an older person by making trips to the grocery store or providing brief periods of respite
  • Informing elderly neighbors about available assistance with prescription drug expenses and home modifications
